Dr. Galanello Renzo has for 30 years been involved in different fields of thalassaemia. He has been and is still involved in the development of new oral iron chelators for treatment of thalassaemia and in setting up new methods of evaluation of iron overload, such as magnetic resonance imaging. In the prevention field, a programme in Sardinia which resulted in a 95% reduction of the thalassaemia major birth rate has been in place since 1977.
Dr. Renzo has contributed to the development and application at clinical level of biochemical and molecular methods for screening of thalassaemias.
His main topics of research on thalassaemia include
  • genotype-phenotype correlation both in β and α thalassemias
  • genetic modifiers of the disease
  • clinical aspects of evaluating and treating iron overload.
