Prof. Dr. A. Nazli Basak, PhD, is a senior faculty member and research
director at the Boğaziçi University. She heads the main reference laboratory
in Turkey, involved in mutation screening and prenatal diagnosis of inherited haemoglobin
disorders, and is a member of the consortium leading the Haemoglobinopathy Control
Programme of the Turkish Health Ministry. In 2005 she was appointed Director of
the Neurodegeneration Research Laboratory (NDAL), established at Boğaziçi
University by the prestigious Kirac Foundation.
Her research interests include the molecular analysis and prevention of hereditary
haemoglobin disorders in Turkey. In the framework of a large study, conducted at
Boğaziçi University since 1986, a comprehensive prenatal diagnosis programme
for the prevention of haemoglobinopathies and thalassaemias in Turkey was established.
