Prof. Giovanni Romeo, MD, is Professor of Medical Genetics at the University of Bologna, and Director of the Medical Genetics Unit at the University's Sant'Orsola Malpighi Hospital.

In 1988, Prof. Romeo founded the European School of Genetic Medicine (ESGM), which offers advanced training courses to young scientists and medical professionals. Prof. Romeo is president of the European Genetics Foundation, the governing body of the ESGM.

The ESGM is at the leading edge of advanced training in the field of genetic medicine, and its courses have been attended by more than 4000 students from over 45 nations during the last 18 years. Presently, numerous universities in Europe officially recognise ESGM courses by crediting their students for participation. In May 2005 the European Society of Human Genetics presented its Education Award to Prof. Romeo during their Annual Congress, in recognition of his accomplishments with the ESGM.
