  • clinical management of patients with haemoglobinopathies, including thalassaemia, sickle cell disease, haemoglobinosis C, and haemoglobinosis O
  • carrier screening through surveys and neonatal programmes to determine prevalence of all abnormal haemoglobin and their distribution throughout the country
  • phenotypic diagnosis of haemoglobin disorders and identification of at-risk couples, which has allowed the implementation and maintenance of of a national patient register
  • molecular diagnosis of different mutations with a range of techniques, including PCR, PCR-RFLP, DGGE, and sequencing
  • genetic councelling and prenatal diagnosis.
